Sikkim - Yambong Singalila Trek

Destination: Bagdogra - Darap - Sangkhola - Naya Patal - Lower Yambong - Lam Pokhari - Pare Meghu - Dhor - Ghairi - Chewabhanjyang - Uttarey - Bagdogra

Day 01: Bagdogra to Darap (06 hrs/5200 ft)

Pickup from Bagdogra airport and drive to Darap, the base village for the Yambong Singalila trek. In the evening walk around this quiet and quaint village . Night halt at a homestay.

 

Day 02: Trek - Sangkhola to Naya Patal (05 hrs / 8179 ft)

After breakfast drive for an hour to the hamlet of Sangkhola, on the banks of the Rimbi river. From here we commence the Yambong Singalila trek ascending to the village of Chongri, the highest and the last settlement in West Sikkim. Our path meanders through thick temperate forests teaming with life. On traversing through the forest a final climb would get us to the grassy meadows of Naya Patal. Overnight in tents.            

 

Day 03: Trek - Naya Patal to Lower Yambong (07 hrs / 12116 ft)

Our ascent continues with the gradient becoming steeper. Our climb alternates between conifer forests and exposed boulders, with the views becoming more fantabulous. The forest areas towards the end are prime habitat for the Monal pheasant, with good chances of sighting one. A large open field marks our campsite for the night. Overnight in tents.

 

Day 04: Trek - Lower Yambong to Lam Pokhari (03 hrs / 14189 ft)

We now cross over the tree line to continue with our short and gentle climb. The landscape drastically alters with juniper shrubs and pretty wild flowers. We set camp on the banks of the serenely beautiful Lam Pokhari lake. Overnight in tents. 

 

Day 05: Trek - Lam Pokhari to Pare Meghu (06 hrs / 12824 ft)

Wake up before sunrise to climb up to Daphe Bhir, the view point from where you admire the first rays of the sun bathe Mt.Khangchendzonga in its golden light.

 

Post breakfast take the route due West , which connects you to the Singalila ridge. Throughout the day you descend and climb, maintaining a steady height, spiraling from one side of the Singalila ridge to another. The initial descent through the woods brings one to pastures where you may find Blue Sheep. Beyond, the trail winds its way steadily through rhododendron thickets. Overnight in tents.

 

Day 06: Trek - Pare Megu to Dhor (06 hrs / 12375 ft)

The trail continues to wind over the Singalila ridge with omnipresent views of Mt. Khangchendzonga. Verdant valleys, open meadows colored with wild flowers and imposing snow clad mountains create a most scenic backdrop for your walk. Set camp in one of the soft green meadows. Overnight in tents.

 

Day 07: Trek - Dhor to Ghairi (04 hrs / 11685 ft)

It’s a relatively short day today as we continue our march on the Singalila ridge, enjoying the rhododendron blooms . Overnight in tents.      

 

Day 08: Trek - Ghairi to Chewabhanjyang (04 hrs / 10446 ft)

Today is our last day on the Singalila ridge. On our way we brush past yaks and sheep being herded by their Nepalese care takers. A steep final descent gets us to our camp site in the Barsey Rhododendron sanctuary. Overnight in tents.

 

Day 09: Trek: Chewabhangyang to Uttarey (04 hrs / 6512 ft)

The first part of your descent today is over steep stone steps, passing through rhododendron forests. On reaching Chitrey , the rhododendron forests gives way to Oaks and other temperate trees, with the gradient tapering off a bit. Cardamom fields mark your entry into Uttarey, from where you drive back to Darap.             

 

Day 10: Darap to Bagdogra (06 hrs)

After breakfast drop to Bagdogra airport.
